5 Other Things to See at Salar de Uyuni

Aug • 7 • 2017

The salt flats of Salar de Uyuni are incredible, and you could spend days wandering around, taking pictures and trying to wrap your mind around this unbelievable place.

But Bolivia is a spectacular country, and there are several other sights to see in the area. Many of the tours that bring you to Salar de Uyuni have additional days to explore the surrounding area.

Here are some of the spots you won’t want to miss:

Cactus Island

Anyone who hasn’t experienced the saguaro cactus in all its glory is really missing out. These spiky plants populate a ridge on the edge of the salt flats, creating an entire island of prickly plants.

Flamingos in the Desert?

This area is a massive breeding ground for three species of fluffy pink flamingos. Who knew? They provide a much needed spot of color in this otherwise monochromatic landscape.

Train Cemetery

This graveyard of empty, rusted trains is incredibly eerie, but crazy cool. It’s a playground for adventurers, so feel free to climb aboard and pretend you’re a conductor.

Andes Mountains

Contrasting the flat terrain of Salar de Uyuni are the towering Andes Mountains. This mountain range runs from Venezuela to Chile, and is home to incredible hikes. You might consider planning a backpacking trip while you’re in the area. Just make sure to acclimate.

Geysers/Hot Springs

There are several volcanic geysers and hot springs scattered in the region. Take a dip in the steamy water, and look out for those blasting pillars of steam.
